What is art?
« Thread started on: Apr 17th, 2008, 4:53pm »
It's a big question, and is often caused by the comment 'That's just not art', but what exactly is art?
I personally think there's a broad definition and a narrow definition. The broad definition is that art is something which expresses a message that is not merely of practical value (so an instrustional manual is not art, for example), that the artist wishes to convey to the perceiver. This unfortunately encompasses a lot of things that would not generally be thought of as art, such as commercials and billboards.
This is why I say there is a narrower definition, which labels art as something of visual nature (but not text, or at least not solely text. We're talking 'art' in the common usage here) which conveys a deep meaning to the perceiver for no reason other than the conveying of that meaning - so this discounts adverts, as they are intended to convey meaning and to encourage one to buy the advertised product.
Well, that's my opinion, anyway. What do you think?
